Hands-On Science

Five K-12 science teachers will spend the summer in a research lab at MSU, Dow Corning or other science-based companies.

The Dow Corning Foundation awarded MSU a three-year grant to support the annual eight-week internships with a working scientist as a mentor. New K-12 teachers who are MSU graduates are eligible for the program.

"The internships will give teachers direct insight into the nature and practice of science," says Joan Ferrini-Mundy, director of MSU's Division of Science and Mathematics Education. "They will learn about working in teams; backing up claims with evidence; and documenting, recording and communicating scientific work."

Upon successful completion of the internship and a final project, each Dow Corning Scholar will earn academic credit applicable toward a master's degree in either the College of Natural Science or the College of Education.
