Clarence Suelter, director emeritus of the Division of Science and Mathematics Education, joined the Michigan State University biochemistry faculty in 1961 after completing two years of postdoctoral work at the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis. He received a doctorate in bochemistry at Iowa State University and a bachelor's and master's degrees at Kansas State University.
His primary research emphasis was in enzymology, specifically enzymes requiring potassium for enzymatic activity.
He authored one book entitled "Practical Guide to Enzymology" and made contributions to many scientific journals and books.
An NSF grant in 1987 for a workshop in molecular biology for high school teachers ultimately led to the creation of the Division of Science and Mathematics Education in the College of Natural Science. He served as its drector from its origin in Fall 1990 until retirement in July 1998.
