Barb Neureither earned her undergraduate degree in biology and her master's degree in curriculum and iInstruction from Michigan State University.

She taught biology (cell biology, human genetics and physiology) at Holt High School and is now teaching SME 301, a science course for future K-8 teachers which emphasizes a hands-on, minds-on approach to teaching and learning science with the State Science Benchmarks as the focus.

Through the College of Education she is working with future secondary teachers during their senior and internship years, helping them prepare for careers in secondary science education.

Barb is a past state director for the Michigan Science Olympiad (michscioly.org), a nonprofit organization whose goal is to improve the quality of science education and increase student interest in science. The 23 events in both the middle school and high school involve all areas of science, mathematics, engineering and technology.

The wide variety of events provides something for all students from the more than 550 Michigan middle schools and high schools that participate each year. These schools compete in 15 regional tournaments around the state during February and March, and then the top 96 teams advance to the State Tournament in April which is hosted by the Division of Science and Mathematics Education in the College of Natural Science at Michigan State University.
