Merle Heidemann earned a bachelor's of science and master's degrees in biology from the University of North Dakota and a doctorate degree in biology from Princeton University
Her work since then has focused on laboratory instruction of undergraduates and practicing science teachers, particularly in the biological sciences. She teaches a course, SME401, Laboratories for Secondary Schools, for senior level students in the College of Natural Science who wish to become secondary teachers.
This course provides students with experiences in a wide range of laboratory science and teaches students how to structure various types of laboratory and other hands-on activities and experiences.
She teaches a series of courses in cell and molecular biology (SME 850, 851 and 852) for practicing teachers with Dr. Ken Nadler (Plant Biology Department). She is also the graduate program director of the DSME, overseeing master's degree students is our MS degree programs in (Physical Science and Biological Science for secondary teachers) and our MAT degree program in General Science for elementary teachers.
She co-teaches with Dr. Joyce Parker, SME 870, Teaching College Science.
Dr. Heidemann continues to develop and test materials for laboratory instruction for both in-service and pre-service teachers. She recently completed work with colleagues to produce web-based supplemental teaching materials in biology using the LON-CAPA platform for course management and development.
She recently has been working with colleagues to develop clusters of diagnostic questions in the biological and geological sciences and to incorporate problem-based learning into various instructional situations. Her professional interests lie with developing and testing curricular materials for laboratories and lectures that are appropriate for secondary and university science students.
