Joan served as Director of the Division of Science and Mathematics Education from 1999-2007, with appointments in Mathematics and Teacher Education. Joan Ferrini-Mundy is a University Distinguished Professor in mathematics education and Associate Dean for Science and Mathematics Education in the College of Natural Science. Her research interests are in calculus learning and mathematics education reform, K-14. She chaired the writing group for Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, the 2000 revision of the NCTM Standards. Her research projects address the development of leadership in mathematics and science education, school-district level improvement in mathematics and science education, and knowledge of algebra for secondary school teaching.

She is currently on assignment at the National Science Foundation as director of the Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings, and will return to MSU in January 2010. Joan was the Lead Principal Investigator for the multi-million dollar PROM/SE project, Promoting Rigorous Outcomes in Mathematics and Science Education, before her current NSF appointment.
