The Frontiers in Science Weekend Workshop Series provides opportunities for teachers with secondary science credentials to meet with top researchers on cutting-edge scientific developments. Michigan State University faculty present the research over a five-hour period: two hours Friday evening and three hours Saturday morning on the MSU campus. Many teachers have found the retreat atmosphere beneficial because it focuses on new science developments and provides a network of science colleagues with whom to discuss teaching strategies.
This unique program is an excellent opportunity to earn additional credits required for continuing certification. The Frontiers in Science Series is part of the Master of Science degree programs offered by the Division of Science and Mathematics Education. Michigan State University's commitment to lifelong learning allows interested persons to register under nondegree, “lifelong education” status. Both academic credit and noncredit participation are available for each of these programs. Participants who wish to receive academic credit must register now, then will receive their grades in Summer Semester 2006. The credit options are variable, based on the number of programs (weekends) a participant attends. You must attend three workshops to earn one semester hour of credit.
To become a part of the Frontiers in Science Program, simply indicate on the application which workshops (weekends) you will attend, specify credit options, sign the application and submit applicable payment. Enrollments beyond the deadline are permitted as space allows. Please inquire if the deadline has passed.
Walk-in participation is discouraged, as from time to time the meeting schedules change. Those who have completed an application will be notified of such changes. We would appreciate advance notification if you have registered for a workshop and are unable to attend. Our website, dsme.msu.edu, will be updated regularly as well.
If you have questions about the Frontiers in Science Program, please call Margaret Iding, Division of Science and Mathematics Education at (517) 355-1708 x105, or e-mail, idingm@msu.edu. We will also provide information about our Master of Science programs for science teachers.
